Who are you?
I’m not just a DJ. I’m a DJ, producer, engineer, songwriter and creative who looks at music from every angle.
I started with production and developed my ear from the studio, which eventually translated into performing and touring. My goal has always been to create an experience rather than just play records. I like blending hip-hop, trap, electronic music, house and different sounds together while still keeping the energy and emotion of the music intact.
What makes my story unique is that I’ve been able to experience the industry from behind the boards, behind the DJ booth and on the road. I’ve worked in environments around major artists and have seen firsthand what it takes to create music and moments at the highest level.
One of the most meaningful pieces of my story is the connection to Drake’s “The Remorse” from Certified Lover Boy. The song contains the line referencing “CJ” in a section where Drake reflects on the people who were there for him during important moments in his life.
Where are you from?
Sacramento, California the West Coast. I grew up around the culture of West Coast hip-hop, where DJing, production, storytelling and having your own sound are all a major part of the identity. Sacramento gave me my foundation, and eventually my career took me across the country and into different parts of the music industry.
Now I’m based in the Midwest and have been building my own lane as CJ WestCoast, but I still carry that West Coast influence everywhere I go. I’ve had the opportunity to perform and work around major artists and touring environments, including Moneybagg Yo, Rod Wave, Lil Baby and G Herbo. The West Coast taught me to have my own identity, while touring taught me how to adapt to any crowd and any stage.
